Edec Development develops, sells and delivers energy efficient control systems
for construction and marine industries. The solutions make use of new technical
solutions, in particular the frequency inverter technology.
Energy saving and energy-efficient buildings have come into public awareness as an
important element in combating climate change. In addition to environmental protection,
companies and private persons can achieve financial savings by investing into new
technology. Often, saving the environment has meant more expensive solutions. This is not
necessarily the case. Edec Development's solutions take advantage of the use of renewable
energy, waste energy and above all, doing things smarter.

The solutions are a combination of new concepts, intelligent control systems and
utilization of inverter technology.
PPMS - Propulsion Power Management System
A modern ship often uses so called electric diesel propulsion. This means that
the ship's generators, powered by diesel engines produce electricity to the power
grid and the pod propellers ‘engines use it. These propulsion lines are usually the
largest consumers of electricity in ships. Since the electrical network is designed
to match the consumption of energy, it can easily be disturbed. When the load is high
and rapid changes take place, or the power plant operation is disturbed, a need for a
mechanism to guarantee the security of electricity in the different systems arises.
PPMS works between the ship's power plant and the propulsion motors adjusting the
available power and propulsion power with each other. Should the power production of
generators get reduced or should there be a sudden increase in electricity consumption
of the ship, PPMS limits the propulsion power stabilizing the power grid. Similarly,
if the propulsion power required declines suddenly, PPMS limits the power plant
production.
HCPMS – intelligent heating and cooling
In traditional solutions heat pumps are used typically either for heating or cooling
solely. This means, that the heat or cold produced by the ‘passive´ side of the heat pump
is transferred through a heat exchanger into air, sea or soil. edec Development's new
control system enables combined production of heat and cold with one heat pump.The system
is particularly suitable for ships, hotels, regional heating and cooling, the production
of residential, industrial and office buildings, etc.
Edec Development has developed a system for water to water type heat pumps, where the
compressor produces either heat or cold (active side) and the heat or cold coming from
the passive side is utilized by an intelligent control system. The control system consists
of a programmable logic controller (PLC) and pumps and valves driven by a frequency
converter. Adjustment is based on the measured temperatures or temperature information
given by the upper automation. If the compressor´s primary operating mode is changed,
the earlier active side changes to inactive. The consumption of heat and cold are rarely
in balance; then the surplus energy is transferred either to a storage tank, water or
land/bedrock.
The water pumps and 3-way valves in the system are controlled by frequency converters
for optimized flow and economy.
For larger entities we have developed a system consisting of multiple heat pumps.
2 to 3 compressors can form one unit controlled by one master PLC. The control system
calculates the required number of heat pumps to start, then the operating modes for
each of the pumps. The system produces both the heat and the cold needed in the premises.
If necessary, additional compressors are started or shut down.
The control system also monitors the compressor units´ operating hours, and equalizes
them.
